THRIVE: an evening of modern dance at Marygrove Theatre

“THRIVE” is an evening performance of modern dance works created by Dance Uprising Artistic Director Amy Cadwallader, company members Rae Dudek, Nicole Heikkilä-Popkin, Ashley Miller, and Robyn Wilson, as well as solos created by company members Lacia Franklin, Sam Krieg, and Autumn Short. Four group works in the concert were created during National Choreography Month (NaChMo) this year. NaChMo provides daily prompts during the entire month of January, which can be combined to create unique choreography.

Choreographers considered the question, “What are the greatest achievements of humankind?” to spark the choreographic process for this production. Responses vary from scientific discovery to infrastructure and industry, from interpersonal strengths to individualized survival. As these dances developed, ideas shifted and revealed a hidden theme: Thriving. Despite hardship, humanity will thrive; struggling through war and destruction, humanity finds a way to not only survive, but also to thrive; despite political setbacks and loss of protected rights, humanity will thrive; despite personal struggles, individuals will thrive; despite cultural conflicts, humanity will thrive.

Dance Uprising presents “THRIVE,” our first full-evening, in-person dance concert. The performance takes place at Marygrove Theatre in Detroit, MI, on May 12, 2023. The show begins at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $20 for general admission and $10 for students / seniors.
