This celebration of bodies features fifteen new choreographic works, created by dancers within Dance Uprising, including Artistic Director Amy Cadwallader, Assistant Director Nicole Heikkilä-Popkin, and company members. Additionally, this year’s event features Body Works themed visual artwork by Michigan visual artists, including Sophie Neslund (@fattycakesmakes), Nicole Lockhart (@awake.dreaming), and Senomneart (@senomneart).

Visual artists will be present to discuss their work (artwork is available for purchase). Enjoy a Silent Auction, browse Dance Uprising merchandise, and enjoy Body themed art with a friend!

Vision

Dance Uprising is a modern dance company located in Ann Arbor, Michigan, directed by dancer/choreographer Amy Cadwallader. We work collaboratively to create unique dance pieces that speak to our human experiences. Our primary purpose is to establish real, human connections — through company class, in our rehearsals, in performances, and through outreach programs.

With so much political turmoil happening right now, it is too tempting to shut down and burrow into a safe place, to ignore what is happening. I want to make a deliberate effort to engage with these difficult topics and create art to express my ideas and those of the dancers who work with me.

Goals

We can accomplish amazing things through dance. In particular, we want to use dance to process and express complex feelings and ideas about our experiences on this planet. The following goals outline four areas of connection that Dance Uprising aspires to uphold.

01.

First and foremost, to create a human connection with every dance encounter.

02.

To create dance works that speak to the human condition, to our current societal influences, to equality and change.

03.

To create access to dance experiences for children and adults in Southeast Michigan through movement and creativity workshops.

04.

To share a love of dance with other dancers and community members in our open company classes.
